ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT
An enterprise – small or big – operating in a single or multiple markets, geographies, product lines – managing initial operations or leveraging on acquired maturity and market presence – embracing profit-making or non-profit making objectives – whatever be the constitution, composition and mission, the common practices key for good management may be summarized – but not limited to – the list above. In an emerging and evolving global as well as a dynamic domestic ecosystem the focus of governing bodies and management teams also evolve. The commitment we make is based on the strategic intent and requirements of the various entities and institutions.
Simply put any strategy has two parts: Formulation and Implementation. Understanding the context, determining the goals or objectives, evaluation of roadmaps which would best fit for the purpose, identification of risk and challenges, creating plans preparing to deal with anticipated as well as unanticipated obstructions and roadblocks, and so on – arriving at a comprehensive approach to drive an initiative from where it stands (as-is-state) towards the intended position (to-be state) – gets covered under Formulation. Implementation involves creation of plans, policies, guidelines, procedures, controls, as well as ensuring knowledge, resources, expertise, and so on – which enables the journey towards the intended ‘to-be’ state.
There is no one format which fits all! So, the endeavour is to apply knowledge, understanding and experience in the best possible combination which enables stakeholders to achieve a change or transformation most effectively.
Project Management is an art, a skill, a mission, an exercise – irrespective of what the underlying objective, product, service or intention is – to craft a meticulously drawn implementation plan and to deliver the best possible solution for the promoters and stakeholders.
Experience, skills, knowledge, temperament, teams, tools, practices – all come together when it comes to managing programs and projects of any sort.
As per the context of a specific project our engagement ranges from providing guidance and training to the other extend of handholding and managing the project deliverables.
Project Management has gained importance over the years – probably due to one important factor amongst others – which is the handling of uncertainties. Both anticipated as well as unanticipated uncertainties act as roadblocks, pose threats and challenges, creates confusion and dilemmas, causes delays and changes and many such interruptions – resulting in losses, damages, problems, loss of opportunities and most important, a failure of achieving intended objectives.
The subject and art of identification, analysis, evaluation, treatment and management of these uncertainties – that is, Project Risks – and the skills of applying controls, measures and interventions to eliminate, reduce, and handle such situations – is a very important aspect of any Project Management.
If there is one thing which all of us have encountered and had to deal with since our schooldays – is Problems! Fundamentally, it is a situation – which cannot or does not move forward unless it is handled in a particular manner. The unique characteristic of any problem is – it usually does not remain static. The natural consequences of not dealing with a problem is that it either grows by multiple proportions or on the other hand dies out to become a non-problem. The first challenge is to evaluate and understand whether a problem will grow or die out naturally – and all of us know that this is no easy decision – because the outcome of going wrong may be disastrous. The other unique nature of a problem is the difficulty to guess whether it is a threat or an opportunity.
In the context of organizations, institutions, businesses, the society, the people, the environment, and so on, problems cannot be left unattended. Thus, it is of paramount importance that by using proven Problem Solving Methods - these are dealt with systematically and resolved effectively.
It is well appreciated and acknowledged in human society that ‘good is the enemy of great’. In another way it may be considered as ‘after becoming good – it is time to get better - and thereafter be great’.
A set of management practices are enablers to make this journey from being good first and then to become great – for institutions, organizations, groups and entities of any form and type.
We are glad to engage and walk the journey together.
Culture involves people – and building a culture takes time and effort. Study, analysis, evaluation, guidelines, principles, policies, tools and methods, awareness, support, motivation, rewards, and many such elements come together to start with an idea or concept – go through a rigorous process of transformation – and emerge into an improved identity.
A key concept in management is the practice of continuous improvement. It is not a natural ability but can be developed as a habit. The concept, practices, planning and implementation to build a Culture of Continuous Improvement is very rewarding for any entity.
We gladly engage with such mission and help establish world-class practices.
Incidents and situations pose threats to disrupt normal functioning. The ability and agility of an entity in being prepared for such uncertainties make a difference in this world of competition.
The systematic and planned way of following best practices and proven standards helps entities and organizations develop effective Business Continuity and Resilience practices.
We apply our experience and knowledge to facilitate interested organizations to plan, implement and effectively use their Continuity and Resilience practices.
One of the key management responsibilities is to manage risk. Irrespective of the depth and breadth of an entity’s plans and practices, risks at an enterprise level are inherent based on the characteristics of the enterprise. One of the typical problems encountered in risk management is when there are gaps between the practices and inherent as well as emerging risks related to the organization. This may happen even when there are world-class practices at functional levels, departmental levels or in partial areas of an organization.
We gladly engage with management teams to plan, establish, implement and put into practice robust Enterprise Risk Management Systems.
The practices listed above are for highlighting strategic significance. Based on organizational or situation context the needed Advisory may either be one of these, or a combination of some or may be other practices which are not listed here. Usually, the engagement would begin with an Expression of Interest and then move towards a structured Initial Engagement followed by a Project Charter or a High Level Project Plan.
