An awareness of all the requirements of ISO 31000 standard can be built within a couple of weeks. A practical understanding of requirements and compliance needs of the standard may be developed within a month. An expertize for implementation of the requirements of the standard can be developed within 3 months. All these are based on certain generic assumptions of who, where, when and how of individuals or entities involved in the learning, awareness and practical purposes are.

For existing management systems it ranges from 6 to 15 months depending on complexity, size, maturity and resources.
For any new entity a minimum of 6 to 8 months is required for certification from the time when operations have started.
Who will provide the ISO 31000 Certificate?
Who will provide the ISO 31000 Certificate?
Only certification bodies accredited by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) are authorized to issue certificates on successful assessment of management systems.
Accreditation Bodies for ISO Certification are available across the geographies - covering most of the countries. The number of such bodies available in a specific location depends on the local dynamics such as maturity of the economy, size of the economy, the industry dynamics, dependency on standardization and certification to ensure governance and social commitments, and similar factors.
However, unlike most of the other ISO Standards, the 31000 is not a certifiable standard - but a Guideline. This means that a Certificate is not issued under this standard - but various Certification Companies do have a system of Evaluation and Verification of an established Enterprise Risk Management System as per the standard.

There is no straight forward answer to this question and remains a dilemma all across. However, it has been observed that hard-working and self-dependent individuals and entities are quite comfortable in achieving their ISO Certifications without depending on external consultants as such.
The usual culture of any organization or leadership may be considered as a guidance for making decisions about engaging external or internal consultants.

Any ISO certificate is valid for 3 years which is renewed for further 3 years after a re-certification review by the certification body.
The underlying condition is that the conformity of requirements as per the ISO Standard applicable is being maintained. Major non-conformities may pose challenges to the validity of the Certificate if not addressed and resolved in an effective manner - to the satisfaction of the Accreditation Body.
However, since 31000 is not a certifiable standard, the validity of an Evaluation or Assessment is based on the Assessing Company's terms and conditions.

After every revision of an ISO Standard, a certain period is allowed for entities to upgrade to the new version of the standard. All new certifications after the date of revision is certified under the new version of the standard. In case of ISO 31000, since this is not a certifiable standard and only a Guideline - the terms of validity of the Assessment depends on the assessing company or body. The latest version of ISO 31000 was published in 2018.
